Family Impact of Respite

We asked families how having group respite access has helped their families, and this is what they shared!

Families shared that respite care provides their child with a place where they feel comfortable, excited, and understood. Children often look forward to attending and show genuine happiness when they know they are going. It is more than supervision — it is a place where they experience joy, routine, and a sense of belonging.

Respite care helps families balance the demands of raising a child with disabilities alongside work, siblings’ activities, and everyday responsibilities. Parents shared that knowing their child is safe and happy allows them to be more present for their other children and reduces stress and guilt.

Group respite allows children to interact with peers in a welcoming environment, build relationships, and feel included in ways they may not experience elsewhere. Even children who are nonverbal or have significant support needs benefit from being around other kids through observation, shared activities, and social engagement.

Parents notice clear signs that their children feel safe and happy in respite care. Some children become visibly excited when told they are going, which reassures families that the environment is supportive and meaningful for them.

Respite programs also provide a sense of community. Seeing other families navigating similar experiences reminds parents they are not alone and offers quiet encouragement and solidarity.

Many caregivers explained that respite gives them rare time to rest, recharge, and care for themselves. For parents with limited support systems, even a few hours away can make a significant difference in their mental and emotional wellbeing.

Families shared that losing respite services would create a significant gap in their lives. Children would lose a place where they feel happy and included, and parents would lose an essential support that helps them maintain balance and continue caring for their child.

Program FAQ:

> Therapies like ABA, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech are medical or clinical services that focus on treating specific developmental challenges. Uniquely Yours is a supportive learning environment where children practice social, communication, and daily living skills through structured activities with peers. Therapy treats, while our program helps children practice and apply skills in real-life settings.

> Uniquely Yours was created specifically for individuals with disabilities who may not be successful in traditional childcare settings. Our program is designed with smaller ratios, individualized support, and staff trained to work with complex needs. We focus on creating an environment where children are included, supported, and valued, while still having fun and building friendships with peers.

> Transportation is not currently available. However, it is in our 3 year development plan as we grow and expand services.

> Our staff are trained to support individuals with disabilities and may receive training in areas such as: behavior support strategies, communication supports, safety awareness, personal care needs, and inclusive recreational programming.

Financial and Payment FAQ:

> Yes. There is a one time $50 enrollment fee per child.

> Rates are based on the tier of support your child requires, which is determined during your enrollment assessment. The support tier placement reflects staffing ratios, level of supervision, and individualized support needed for safe and meaningful participation.

> Programs like Uniquely Yours operate with much higher staffing and training requirements because the children we serve often need individualized support for safety, communication, and daily participation. Our goal isn’t just supervision – it’s creating a place where children with complex disabilities can safely play, learn, and build friendships while giving families the support they desperately need.

> If you are currently on the family support waitlist, you may still be able to access state respite funding through approved respite hours. In addition, we are working to offer scholarship opportunities to help make services more accessible for families when possible.

> At this time, we do not accept insurance. Our services are private pay, though some families may be able to use state respite funding or other support programs to cover costs.

> We understand the financial challenges many families face. Some families may be able to use: daycare assistance, state respite funding, scholarship opportunities. We are happy to help families explore available funding options.

> Yes, we accept daycare assistance (DCA) for eligible families to attend our programs. However, families may need to pay some out of pocket costs dependent on scholarship availability.
